Boarding school bursar salary
A boarding-school bursar in 2025/26 typically sits in a £65,000 to £115,000 base-salary band, with the upper end reflecting full-boarding schools above 600 pupils. On-site accommodation, where provided, is a material non-cash element of total reward and is normally treated as a benefit-in-kind.
The band
Boarding schools pay a structural premium over comparable day schools, reflecting the seven-day operational tempo, the heavier H&S and safeguarding load, and the larger estate. ISBA's survey separates day and boarding comparators on every cut.[1]
On-site accommodation
On-site accommodation is the most common non-cash element of the package. The notional value of the accommodation is reported on form P11D as a benefit-in-kind. A senior boarding bursar with a four-bedroom school house typically reports a benefit-in-kind of materially over £10,000 a year on top of base salary.[2]
Full versus flexi boarding
A school that operates flexi-boarding (less than five nights a week) carries a lower operational tempo than a full-boarding school. Pay tends to sit between day-school and full-boarding levels for the same pupil count.[3]
