Diploma of School Business Management
DSBM is the progression qualification from CSBM, designed for SBMs preparing to step up to senior or MAT central-team roles. The current programme is delivered by Best Practice Network. Most learners complete the programme in 12 to 18 months.
Cost
The published 2025/26 cohort fee starts at £2,400 plus VAT per learner for the school-funded route. Funding arrangements vary; some local authorities and MAT central teams contribute towards the fee for high-potential SBMs.[1]
Length and assessment
DSBM runs over approximately 12 to 18 months. Assessment combines written assignments, a workplace project and a final professional discussion. The programme is designed to be sat alongside a substantive SBM post.[1]
Beyond CSBM
The DSBM syllabus extends CSBM into strategic finance, MAT-level governance, advanced procurement, complex HR, capital projects and change leadership. It is the natural progression for an SBM moving into a senior maintained school, a special school SBM post or a MAT central role.[2]
When to take it
Most learners take DSBM two to four years after CSBM. Career changers from accountancy or NHS finance backgrounds sometimes skip CSBM and start with DSBM, normally after a year in a substantive school post to provide the workplace context for the assessments.[3]
