CSBM vs DSBM vs ISBA Diploma
The three routes solve overlapping but distinct problems. CSBM proves entry-level competence; DSBM proves senior competence in the maintained and academy sector; the ISBA Diploma proves independent-sector competence. The right route is the one that fits the sector and career stage.

Sector fit
Maintained-sector bursars almost always take CSBM and progress to DSBM. Independent-sector bursars almost always take the ISBA Diploma. Bursars moving between the sectors normally hold both DSBM and the ISBA Diploma over the course of a career.[1][2]
Progression route
The conventional progression is CSBM in the first SBM appointment, DSBM at the point of stepping into a senior post or a MAT central role, and the ISBA Diploma if and when the bursar moves into or returns to the independent sector. None of the three carries any statutory weight on its own.[3]
